A new year... a new stitcher :)

Wednesday, January 1, 2014

I think I must have been transported to an alternate universe.

You know - the one where your husband starts to leaf through your cross stitch magazine you just got for Christmas. The one where your son gives you a present he stitched himself...

Yes, my soon to be 12 year old son stitched this.
Mostly all by himself.

It seems he has my creative gene... he decided to change a few things on the pattern,
changed the butterfly a bit,
added a sun,
and then he added the I Love U at the bottom.

A budding designer?

Well, that's not the end of the story.

After completing this one he wanted to start another.
So he picked a few kits from a pile I was thinking of getting rid of.

He now has his own stash.
Even a bag of floss, and a threader.

So here's the kit he picked to start on

a close-up of the first row...wow

his progress last night:

and here's where he got tonight:

Today he was asking if he could add beads.
He'd like to replace the door handle with a bead in this one,
and use beads for the word as well.

He knows how to start and anchor the threads too.

Back to bedtime... and here's how our conversation went:

James, it's bedtime.

But can't I stay up and stitch?

No, you need to get some sleep.

Awww... can't I just finish this colour I'm on?

Earlier he said he wanted to race me to see who would finish their project first.

uh-huh

lol

I can just imagine the next time I want to go away on a stitch retreat...
let's not think about that...

hmmmm... maybe I need to go hide my stash with the chocolate...

... should I tell him about Kreiniks?

:)

Bravo, James! Looks like he's been bitten by the stitching bug - lookout! I'm thinking of all the stash I've accumulated since I started stitching about five years ago. James started a lot earlier than I did, so you might need to add an extra room to your house or rent a storage space for the stash he might start collecting. ;-)
I'm always happy to hear of a young person who is interested in this craft (or any craft, really) but it's especially exciting to know their are guys who are interested in stitching. I actually have a chart of a reproduction sampler by a young man named James Wilson. It might be too difficult for your James to tackle just yet, but it might be a project he'd be interested in trying out some day. Happy New Year to you and your family, and tell James he's doing great work and to stick with it!

It was touching to see a gift that James stitched for you. It looks great! I'm really happy to hear that he is interested in making things! Crafting is a dying trend and knowing that through one more young person it won't is encouraging! From the sounds of it though...the race is on!
